Frequently Asked Questions about AccuSpray

1. How large should my compressor be?

Generally a 5hp compressor is sufficient.  Our HVLP guns consume about 10cfm at 40psi (cfm is a measure of air volume).  Most 5hp compressors will handle that amount of air consumption without starving the compressor and your finish for air.  Our 19c gun only requires a 2hp compressor because all it consumes is 5cfm.

2. Can I put my Accuspray gun in a gun washer?

We recommend only 5 minutes in a gun washer for our aluminum (metal) body guns.  For our composite body guns, we do not recommend using a gun washer at all.  You can clean the exterior of the gun using a rag with the proper solvents.  For cleaning of the interior and cup, refer to your gun manual.

3. What do the numbers on the air caps mean?

There is a direct correlation between the air cap number and the air cap size.  The smaller the number the smaller the air cap atomizing holes.  Another way to look at is to use the smaller air caps on thinner materials and use the larger air caps on thicker materials.  Also, the smaller the air cap the finer the atomization, but be careful you can over atomize by using an air cap that is too small.  For example, a #5 air cap is great for stains, light lacquers, and automotive base coats.  A #10 air cap is great for enamels, urethanes, and latex coatings.  Using a #5 air cap for a latex paint will not give you the finish you are looking for from our guns.  Tech service can give you specific recommendations on air cap sizes. Use the form above, "ask the Gun Guru", or call 800-618-6860 and ask for tech support.

4. Which air caps go with which guns?

Single digit air caps (eg. #5 through #10) are primarily used with architectural coatings in the composite, #19 & #19i guns.

Triple digit air caps beginning with "70" (eg. #705 & #706) are primarily used in our gravity guns for spraying lower solid automotive coatings, single stages, and base coats.

Triple digit air caps beginning with "72" (eg. #725 & #726) are primarily used in our gravity guns for spraying higher solid materials like automotive clear coats and high solids lacquers.

Triple digit air caps beginning with "80" (eg. #805 & 807) are used strictly in our 19c Low CFM guns which are recommended in applications where smaller compressors are used or where air availability is an issue.

5. What is HVLP?

HVLP stands for "high volume low pressure."  That means HVLP guns use a high volume of air at low pressures to atomize paint.  To be HVLP compliant, guns must be able to atomize with 10psi or less at the air cap (this usually yields transfer efficiencies greater than 65%).

6. What is a turbine and why should I choose one?

In very simple terms, a turbine is a vacuum cleaner that runs in reverse.  Turbines are ideal for situations that require a portable air source with superior finish quality.  Turbines offer clean, oil-free air totally free from moisture and range in weight from 19lbs. to approximately 35lbs, which makes them easily portable.

7. What size turbine should I choose?

Turbines are rated by psi and volume (cfm).  Those factors are dictated by the size and number of fan blades (stages).  We have several turbines to choose from:

22sp--(2 stage turbine) Ideal for spray light viscosity coatings such as stains, shellacs, and alkyds.

23--(3 stage turbine) Used for mid-size jobs.  Can be used for a wide range of architectural and automotive coatings.

230--(Heavy duty 3 stage turbine) Ideal for extended hours on larger jobs with the capability of spraying the widest range of coatings.  This unit includes cooling fan and heavy duty bearings for overload protection.

24--(3 stage turbine and compressor unit) Medium duty turbine with a compressor for pressurizing a 2 quart remote cup with the ability to control fluid pressure and fine tune finish quality.

240--(4 stage turbine) The 240 offers extra atomizing air pressure for difficult to spray materials at faster speeds.  Produces professional results on everything from clears to multi-colors.  It includes a cooling fan.

Turbo IV--(4 stage turbine and compressor unit) Used for medium to heavy duty jobs with the ability to pressurize a remote cup assembly.  Ideal for cabinetry.

8. How often should I change the filters on my turbine or portable compressed air system?

The filters should be inspected before each use.  Clean filters are very important to the performance and life span of your turbine and/or compressor.  Dirty filters will result in low air output and will cause premature failure of your equipment.  Several factors dictate how often you will change these filters.  If you keep and eye on the cleanliness of the filters, it is very easy to tell when it is time for a change.
